Choosing a Roof Color

February 9, 2023 by MikeDominick

Choosing a Roof Color

Your roof is a major part of your home’s overall look and when it comes to building a new roof or replacing a roof, color is a major decision.

Depending on your neighborhood HOA rules your roof choices may be limited. If they are not then there are many options to choose from. Consider your home’s exterior, the homes around you, and what material your roof will be made of when choosing a roof color.

When it comes to energy efficiency, roof color plays a small role in how your roof works. Today’s technology, roof design, ventilation and insulation are much more important in how your roof operates in the heat or cold. However, roof color can make a small difference. Light color roofs tend to better reflect the sun, keeping your roof cooler, especially in more warm climates. Dark color roofs absorb more sun and can reduce the build up of ice and snow in cold environments.

All roofing materials will fade at some level. Metal roofs tend to withstand fading from the sun a little better than asphalt shingles due to the coating treatment they receive. Clay tiles will not fade for at least 50 years. Darker colors will fade more dramatically than light colors.

When choosing a roof color be sure to look at samples in differing light conditions. Your home may get predominantly morning or afternoon sun which can make a difference in how the color displays. The further south you go in the country the light tends to have more of a reddish hue that may slightly change how your roof looks in the daylight.

Your roof color should contrast but complement your home’s exterior. Think about resale value when you choose a roof color especially if you are thinking about something exotic. There are charts available online that will help you find the best shingle color to match the exterior materials and color of your home.

Pros and Cons of Skylights

Pros and Cons of Skylights

Skylights – people either seem to love them or hate them. But what’s the truth about skylights? Like anything, there are pros and cons. It’s important to understand both before you make a decision about if skylights are right for your home. So whether you are working on a new build or thinking about renovations, here are some things to consider about skylights.

Skylight Benefits

Skylights are popular for a reason. They can add more natural light to a room, making it feel more open and welcoming. Other benefits include:

– More views of the outside world

– Reduced energy usage because of increased natural light

– Come in a wide variety of designs, shapes and sizes

– Can create a dramatic sense of style in a space

Alternatively though there are some important things to consider before choosing skylights.

It is important to choose the space for your skylight carefully as it could create too much light or too much heat depending on the space and size. Be sure to consider the direction your house sits to know what type of daylight and how much you’ll be getting.

Other factors to consider are:

– Losing heat during the winter months

– Improper installation or insulation can lead to leaks

– Difficulty in cleaning

After careful consideration, think about whether a traditional window could achieve what you are looking for a skylight to do. No matter what you decide it’s important to leave any roofing work to the professionals. Talk with the experts at Phoenix Roofing before moving ahead with any roof repairs or renovations. We can help you make informed decisions that will protect the integrity of your roofing system!

Should I Clean my Roof?

January 25, 2023 by MikeDominick

Should I Clean my Roof?

Just like any exterior part of your home, being exposed to the elements can take a toll on your roof. You may start to notice a black substance on your shingles – most likely algae or even moss growing in certain areas of your roof. This is where a professional cleaning can really help.

Algae tends to have a black/blue color and is often mistaken for mold. It can cause unsightly stains and will continue to worsen until it is removed through cleaning. Algae thrives in humid environments and grows well in shady, damp areas. Algae by itself is not damaging to asphalt shingles but can lead to other problems such as mold development, wood rot or damaging the structural integrity of your roof.

Moss is another common roof ailment. It develops in environments that are cool and damp such as an area of your roof that is shaded by trees. Sometimes moss can be seen from the ground but it often can develop underneath the shingles and will only be detected from a roof inspection. Moss can cause your shingles to warp and crack, causing the deterioration of the outer layer of roof protection.

So what should you do?

Experts recommend having your roof cleaned at least once a year. Due to the delicate nature of the work and the potential safety hazards, it should be done professionally.

Roof cleaning typically involves a bleach solution that will kill the algae or moss growth. A broom or bristle brush will be used to clean the roof without damaging the shingles.

Metal roofs need to be cleaned as well. Water can be used to remove visible debris but further cleaning may be needed. Metal roofs require soft tools such as washcloths or bristle brushes. A mild solution of detergent or car washing soap may also be used.

If you haven’t had your roof cleaned or haven’t paid attention to the state of your roof, contact the experts at Phoenix Roofing today! They can set up a full evaluation of the state of your roof and make recommendations that will keep your roof looking and working good for years to come!

The Importance of Roof Ventilation

January 18, 2023 by MikeDominick

The Importance of Roof Ventilation

Your roof is so much more than just a covering for your home. It is an intricate system designed to protect your home and involves particular parts and designs to keep your home functioning properly.

One such system is roof ventilation.

Roof ventilation is a system of intake and exhaust vents that provide air circulation. This air circulates around the attic of the home.

Roof vents help extend the life of your roof, regulate the temperature indoors and reduce your home energy costs.

Without proper roof ventilation your roof can overheat and condensation can build up leading to mold or rot. This can pose a serious health risk as well as damage your home. Roof vents are necessary in all climates and seasons.

Types of Roof Vents:

Intake vents – Soffit vents or rooftop intake vents, typically located at the lowest point of the roof. Allows fresh air to enter the home.

Static exhaust vents – don’t require an electricity but make use of natural air flow

– Ridge vents – easy to install at the highest point of the roof, allows hot air to escape the attic, blend in easily with a low profile

– Hip vents – for homes with limited to no ridge areas, can also be combined with ridge vents

– Roof louvers – another option for smaller roof areas or roofs with no ridge line, require multiple vents

Powered exhaust vents – remove large amounts of air using the power of electric or solar energy. Typically include thermostat control

Every home is different and may require different types of ventilation depending on your roof style, home build and location. The experts at Phoenix Roofing can confidently assess and design a ventilation system for either a new or existing roof. Contact the team at Phoenix Roofing today!

What to do if a tree falls on your roof.

January 12, 2023 by MikeDominick

What to do if a tree falls on your roof.

It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare. A storm blows in and those beautiful trees on your property become dangerous projectiles. A strong wind pushes one of those trees over onto your roof. What should you do?

Safety is the first and most important thing in this situation. Evacuate your home immediately and call 911. When a tree hits you won’t know if more structural damage could have been done causing other parts of the roof to cave in. Get out and get somewhere safe. Your roof could continue to weaken under pressure so time is of the essence.

Once you are safely outside of your home, call your insurance company to let them know what is going on. They may want you to take photos or videos to document the incident. They can begin the process of getting your home repaired and back to normal.

The emergency personnel on the scene will let you know if your home is safe to return to or if you need to find alternate shelter. Homeowners or renters insurance may cover the cost of a hotel if needed.

Once the shock of the situation has worn off and you are somewhere safe and warm, it’s time to contact a local, reputable roofing company. This company can do a thorough inspection and recommend either repair work or full replacement, depending on the extent of the damage.

Phoenix Roofing has been around long enough to understand the ins and outs of roof damage from wind and trees. Sometimes the damage may be minimal such as if a tree limb is all that was involved. However if an entire tree was to fall on the roof there may be more interior damage that will require additional contractors to fix. Working with a local, trusted company will help you and your family get back to normal quickly and with the peace of mind you would want in this situation.

Should You Be Home During a Roof Repair

December 29, 2022 by MikeDominick

Should You Be Home During a Roof Repair

Having work done on your home at any time can be stressful. Due to the nature of what is being done it will be an inconvenience and can cause additional stress to your family. However working with the right contractor can prepare you for what is ahead and give you the peace of mind to endure the temporary headache.

Phoenix Roofing has years of experience working on repair and replacing roofs. We understand what a huge undertaking it is and how important it is to get right. Before any project begins we take the time to prepare you for what is to come and what the process will be like.

Here are a few reasons why you may not want to be at home as normal during a roof repair or replacement:

– Noise – Roof work is noisy and loud, from hammering to nail guns, prepare for a lot of noise. This is especially important to keep in mind if you have pets.

– Safety – Roofers understand the job that has to be done and how to do it. What they can’t account for is where you may be coming in or out of your home. The old roof may be thrown down and it’s important to not be in the way when that happens.

– Vehicle Access – There will be a lot of trucks coming in and out and you don’t want your vehicle to get trapped when you need it.

Once you consider these factors you can make arrangements for your family or pets on the day of your roof work. It’s understandable if you want to be home to observe but you must put your safety and your family’s safety first. Talk with the experts at Phoenix Roofing to understand what the process will be like and how you can be a part of it.

Christmas Light Hanging and Removal Tips

December 21, 2022 by MikeDominick

Christmas Light Hanging and Removal Tips

Roofs get more attention this time of year than perhaps any other time due to the beauty of Christmas lights adorning their outline and the special guest who is expected to arrive on December 24th.

Outdoor Light Tips:

– Before installing any lights, test the strands to make sure they work

– Dispose of any damaged or frayed strands

– Find your best outdoor power source – typically located near the porch area

– Invest in a weather-proof extension cord

– Don’t work alone! Have a helper with you to hand the lights, align them correctly and hold the ladder when needed

– Install fasteners to help you lay the lights in a more uniform and easier to set up way, heavy duty plastic or rubber are the best material fastener to use

– Don’t connect more than three strands together at a time, otherwise you could incur more of a fire risk from an overloaded system

– Get on the ground to inspect your work and make adjustment as necessary

Remember safety is paramount! Don’t try to install lights in poor weather or without someone to help!

When it comes time to remove your decorations, use the same care and common sense. It’s a good idea to shut off the outside electricity. Dispose of anything that may have become damaged during the season. Store properly and label for next year!

Merry Christmas from all of us at Phoenix Roofing!

Metal Roofing

December 8, 2022 by MikeDominick

Benefits of Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has had a resurgence lately with many people discovering the benefits of using it for their homes. From new construction to roof replacements, metal roofing is a viable alternative to typical shingles and may be the right choice for you.

Metal roofs are typically made from steel, aluminum, copper, zinc or tin. They can be styled in a way to resemble the look of tile, slate, shakes or shingles.

Benefits of Metal Roofing

– Metal roofs can last 40-70 years depending on which material you choose. This compares to asphalt roofs that typically last about 12-20 years.

– Metal roofs are very durable and depending on what material they are made of can be high wind resistant, protected from corrosion or cracking and impact resistant.

– Because of their material, metal roofs are protected from fire or lightning strikes.

– Roofs made out of metal reflect UV rays from the sun that contribute to heating up your home. Metal roofs can decrease your overall cooling costs.

– Metal roofs can be made of recycled material and recycled when they are no longer needed.

Metal roofs might not be for everyone. You need to consider a higher upfront cost even though that may pay for itself over time. Correct installation is imperative and working with a knowledgeable roofing company can save you a lot of headaches in the future.

The experts at Phoenix Roofing Company can explain the pros and cons of any roofing type. They are experienced to install metal or shingled roof and can provide a free estimate so you can make and educated decision for your home. Contact the team at Phoenix Roofing today.
